Job Description

Responsibilities:
The Specialist will support the GSFC Advanced Manufacturing Branch (AMB, or Code 547) and scientific project customers to identify coating solutions for a range of advanced scientific instrument and spacecraft requirements. Responsibilities will include meeting with NASA instrument scientist and principal investigators (i.e., Codes 600 and 400) to understand the relevant science objectives of the instruments and spacecraft they will design and build. The Specialist will use combined, substantial knowledge of applicable science with a similarly substantial knowledge of various anodizing, electroplating and similar coating technologies to identify and recommend coating solutions that will enable and support the scientific objectives of the instruments and spacecraft. In addition to expertise in both science and various coating techniques, the Specialist will consider relevant factors including the mission-specific space environment, mission duration, thermal extremes and similar characteristics in identifying candidate coating solutions. These solutions can include existing coating processes currently available in the AMB or commercial sources, as well as custom developed coatings, as customer requirements, funding and schedule dictate.
Requirements:
Individual will have a strong familiarity with the chemistry involved in anodizing, electroplating, electroless plating, and conversion coating processing, including all phases of the processes to successfully apply said coatings to various substrates, such as part cleaning, etching, coating and sealing, as applicable. The individual will be familiar with the space environment, including the mission-specific effects of electromagnetic radiation (infrared, ultraviolet, visible), particulate radiation, atomic oxygen, thermal and vacuum conditions and expected impacts on materials in those environments. The individual will have expertise in Physics, Chemistry, and light/radiation related specialties such as optical systems, spectroscopy and stray light to facilitate productive consultation with GSFC scientific and project leads. Working knowledge of the MS Office software suite is also required (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
Education & Experience:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or similar discipline is required. A Masters or PhD degree is preferred.
