The Flight Projects Directorate, Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) (Code 407) is seeking a highly qualified individual to manage the technology requirements, initiatives, investment strategies, business strategies and advocate advanced technology developments for the Office of Earth Science Divison Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at NASA.

As an Aerospace Technologist (AST) specializing in Technical Management, the incumbent serves as the Technology Development Manager in the Earth Science Technology Office (ESTO) and is assigned to manage the technology requirements, initiatives, investment strategies, business strategies and advocate advanced technology developments for the Office of Earth Science Division of Science Mission Directorate (SMD) at NASA. 

Duties include leading the definition, design, and implementation of advanced instrument, spacecraft, and information systems technology infusion and their overall integration into the future earth science missions; providing technical, programmatic and budgetary guidance in executing the new technology and commercialization activities; developing, implementing, and managing coordination among NASA, government agencies and universities and other research and commercial entities, facilitating information exchange on requirements and potential NASA Earth Science technologies that meet the future needs; organizing and leading multi-Center and external system analysis and trade studies to support investment strategies and delineate opportunities made possible by emerging technologies; coordinating the processes and schedules by which Agency, interagency, commercial entities, universities and other research organizations involved with development of Earth Science instruments and application of Earth Science data,like cloud computing, data processing and state of art information systems concepts; organizing technology working groups to define and prioritize technology needs for Earth Science missions, identifying technology needs for Earth Science, and interacting with technology providers to generate roadmaps and development plans. Take lead role in documenting the on-going program on a yearly basis; defining program baselines and modifications, and conducting regular reviews of new technology implementation and associated financial plans; defining programmatic metrics for interim evaluation of progress for multi-year projects and participating in the development of new technology planning thrusts, and remaining current with new technology requirements, studies and outreach activities.

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. 

Specialized experience is defined as leading the definition, design, and/or implementation of advanced instrument, spacecraft, or information systems technology infusion and their overall integration into science missions as they relate to Earth remote sensing applications. Additionally, coordinating information exchange among government agencies and commercial entities and leading system analysis and/or trade studies in support of investment strategies for emerging technologies.

Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major study in Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biomedical Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science*, Earth and Planetary Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Geology, Geophysics, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Metallurgy, Meteorology, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Oceanography, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Space Science, Structural Engineering, Welding Engineering or other appropriate physical science or engineering field. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position. *Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.
